When Passion Meets Perseverance, This is What Happens

July has been an absolutely incredible month for the Heart & Soul Hoops family and we’d like to take a moment to reflect and give thanks. Thank you to everyone who’s believed in us from day 1 and provided us the platform to empower young men and young women through basketball competition by providing an environment that develops receptive minds, healthy bodies, and ethical spirits. We are so grateful to be doing what we love every day.

10 July marked the very first Heart and Soul Hoops camp at Knox Grammar School and the turnout exceeded our wildest expectations. The camp brought together over 90 of Sydney’s best young prospects and our amazing coaching staff to create an environment full of dedication, drive, and optimism. New friendships were made, leadership skills were learned, and crucial fundamentals were developed. Thank you to the players for fueling our inspiration and continuously reminding us why we do what we do.

Thank you to the following professional coaches who mentored our players throughout the 2 day camp:

  • NBL star AJ Ogilvy (AJ is a centre for the Illawarra Hawks, has represented Australia in the 2007 Junior World Championships and has been a part of the Australian National Team on several occasions).
  • WNBL star Ellie Manou (Ellie is a forward and has played for the AIS, Sydney Uni Flames, Dandenong Rogers, and Townsville Fire).

Check out these highlights and photos from the camp!

Of course, the success of the camp wouldn’t have been possible without our founder Alex Moore Porter. Alex’s drive and positive attitude is visibly instilled in every one of our players!

Alex knows a thing or two about what it takes to thrive at such a demanding sport, as Alex herself has had a successful career in basketball spanning over a decade. Her career began at NAIA Azusa Pacific University in California where she played in Division 1 from 2009-2011. ¬†As captain of her team, she led the Cougars to a National Championship in 2011 and two Conference Championships in 2010 and 2011. During her career at Azusa Alex was the first player to earn 3 consecutive All-American selections with a career total of 1,833 points. Alex holds the second highest scoring average for the Cougar women’s basketball program in history.

Alex is also a 3-time All-Golden State (GSAC) Player and has made the NAIA All-Tournament Team for three consecutive seasons. In recognition for her outstanding performance during the 2010-2011 season, Alex’s jersey was placed at the Ring of Display in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, TN.

As a coach, Alex has mentored girls and boys aged 7 to 18. Alex moved to Sydney in 2015 and has since received overwhelming praise from the local basketball community. As her company’s name conveys, Alex truly puts her heart and soul into every aspect of this sport.
